Fant4stic Review: 2015's Ultimate Destruction

Fant4stic stars Miles Teller (Reed Richards), Kate Mara (Sue Storm), Michael B. Jordan (Johnny Storm), & Tintin (Ben Grimm) combined we got the titular “team”. I’m just going to use the quote mark every time I use the word “team” (there). Directed by Josh Trank (Chronicle), the film intended to be an original concept for an adaptation of Marvel’s Fantastic Four comics. So, Reed Richards was going to build a machine that could teleport human to another place on Earth. But finally 7 years after he build it, at a science fair, somehow Franklin Storm and his adopted  daughter Susan found Reed & Ben’s project correspondent as “the Quantum Gate” that the Storms working in except that Reed’s can make the material that has been transported into another dimension (yeah, he didn’t know it first, but then finally gets it) back again. And so that’s why Storm has to include Reed on completing the project. There are names, including Victor Von Doom (played not motion captured by Koba), who was attached to this “Quantum Gate”, well he was the one who designed it. And this is not considered as a spoiler (because literally there are nothing to spoil (we’ll get to that), he is the antagonist. Yes, he is the bad guy, and he only being bad for the whole movie, but could only manifest his uncertain evil purpose at the “end” of the film.

I laughed so hard at the end when Reed was going to say his idea for the “team”s name, then the title came out, and that was it. I was setting my expectation so so so low.. because of the rave reviews the previous day before I watched this. The whole morning I managed myself not to overthink this film as a torture. But then again, this film was another sick, devastating, simply horrible, and unacceptable. I enjoyed the first half of the film, laughed at some of the jokes made by the (supposedly) Human Torch-yet-to-be, and amazed (somehow) by Trank’s direction. And then this happened, the whole thing just collapse, harshly. The story was never going anywhere, and audiences left dumbfounded about what they just saw, not that it’s confusing but it has no sense at all, too many sins a movie can handle, really weird CGI and dull storyline. I believe if you watched the first half, just before the guys going to the other dimension, then you left the building, and never watched it again for the rest of your life, you probably would say the film was a OK. Just that.

Fant4stic was not fantastic at all, it’s lack of fairness in telling the story exactly like what Trank’s had visioned was I think the main reason of why this movie did not work. And because of that nothing ever happened in this movie. I'd understood where the story would’ve gone but then again it’s just gone astray. I would rate this film just for the first half, unfortunately the movie’s ending ruined to whole thing. For the cast, they’ve done a good job, they’re all talented and they’ve done nothing but following the ultimately destructive direction, I’ll give them a D. For the script, because the first half was good I’ll give it an F, and the movie alone is an F.

Note: If you followed the news or Josh Trank on social media, you probably read or heard that he wasn’t involved in the final cut, well I kinda believed that. I really hope that they'll release the Director’s Cut, I would watch that.
